U.S. govt reduces the free information we get

Musk locked govt employees out of info systems and makes us sign up for X to get directions to the next propaganda drop.

This morning, the National Transportation Safety Board announced on Musk's platform, X:

For media covering the airplane crashes in Washington and Philadelphia—all NTSB updates about news conferences or other investigative information will be posted to this X account. We will not be distributing information via email.

In reaction, The Desk filed an information request under the Freedom of Information Act.

The NTSB says it will no longer email news outlets or reporters with notifications of upcoming press conferences, including those on plane crashes in Washington and Philadelphia. Instead, all notifications will be made on X. We're filing a FOIA to find out more about the change in policy.

One implication here is that some basic government information — like notifications of press conferences (paid for with our tax dollars, which I mention in case anyone cares) about matters of public safety (concerning the use of our tax dollars) — may become unavailable to those of us who don't have an X account.

On that point, be aware:

  • Setting up an X account means giving Elon Musk your date of birth, together with your phone number (default option) or else your email address.
  • Using an X account means letting him track everything you read, engage with, or say on X, and also giving him your phone data if you use the phone app.
  • Using an X account easily and proficiently — you see fewer ads, and others actually see what you post — means paying Musk for one of the three tiers of X Premium. Yearly, for U.S. residents, that's $32, $84, or $229.

I'm not suggesting you pay for X.

Musk is the richest man in the world because his strategies include befriending the president of the country with the largest GDP, immediately locking government employees out of information systems, then data-mining and demanding payment from every ordinary person who wants directions to the next propaganda drop.

My suggestion is along these lines: We need to find other information sources.
