HR 9495 passed House, will go to Senate

In the House, nearly all Republicans voted for it, and nearly all Democrats voted against it. It now goes to the Senate.

Three days ago, I suggested calling your House Representative about HR 9495, the "Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act."

TODAY: Call your rep: No on HR 9495. Protect nonprofit advocacy.
Tell your rep: No on HR 9495, should it come to the full House for a vote. It would empower the government to crush nonprofits without reason or evidence.

Unfortunately, it passed the House today. Nearly all Republican representatives voted for it (204 yes, 1 no), and nearly all Democratic representatives voted against it (15 yes, 183 no). See the roll call for how your representative voted.

Next, it will go to the Senate for a vote. It doesn't seem there's yet a number for the Senate version of the bill.

You can start contacting your senators about it. Ask them to vote 'no.'

You can also keep letting people know about it. Share the ACLU's press release, published today.

As I wrote earlier, this law would enable the Treasury Dept to cancel a nonprofit's tax-exempt status without reason or evidence, thereby empowering the executive branch (Trump) to crush nonprofit advocacy. Read the bill (PDF). It's opposed by the ACLU and over a hundred other orgs.
