For Trans Day of Remembrance, Attend a Vigil
Tonight is TDOR. See what's happening at a queer community center or a church.
Today is the 25th Transgender Day of Remembrance, observed since 1999 in response to the murders of Chanelle Pickett and Rita Hester, both in Massachusetts.
See if there's a local vigil tonight, and attend it.
Try searching the hashtags #tdor and #transgenderdayofremembrance on your platform of choice (those links go to Facebook, just as one suggestion) along with the name of your city. Or check out your local newspaper's event listings.
If your city has a queer community center, something's probably happening there. For example, the San Diego LGBT Community Center has an event tonight that it's advertising in English and Spanish.
Queer-inclusive churches often host vigils too. For example, tonight in Quincy, Massachusetts, the Quincy Pride organization will hold a vigil on the steps of the United First Parish Church.
Keep in mind
"Surveys suggest that Black trans women make up less than 8% of the US trans population, yet they make up over 30% of our U.S. list and 50% of the losses from violent crimes. This year, 86% of all deaths due to violence were BIPOC community members."
— 2024 Remembrance Report of the Trans Remembrance Project
This year in the US, the Trans Remembrance Project (TransRemembrance.org) has counted 70 nonviolent deaths (including by suicide) and 43 violent deaths. The organization gathers the names from published obituaries as well as from community members who send them information.
